Originally conceived and tested on my 86 G-body, I was
successful in implementing rear wheel ABS for use on my 3rd
generation F-body.
Parts and Installation:
You will need to track down an early '90s S10 or S15 GM
pickup truck originally equipped with RWAL ABS system.
You will then need to obtain wiring diagrams and
diagnostic information pertaining to the ABS unit you
acquire.
As far as installation issues, the ABS control valve
assembly must be installed after the brake system
combination valve but location is not important. Find the
brake line that leads to the rear axle and locate a
suitable location for the ABS valve assy. The best place
is up under the power brake booster. The lines must
be cut, bent and re-flared to accommodate the ABS valve assy. Make a mental note when retrieving the ABS parts from the
donor vehicle as to which port is the inlet and outlet.
After installation, the ABS control module can be
installed much like it was intended from the factory: in
the engine compartment next to the master cylinder.
Wiring should be a no brainer if you have obtained
all the wiring information and diagrams that are needed. This RWAL ABS
simply uses the brake warning light wire connected to the
master cylinder to signal faults to the driver in case of
an error. Or you can get creative as I did and make a
dedicated ABS warning light in the instrument cluster in
place of the old choke light.
The ABS computer simply uses vehicle speed sensor
information to determine if the rear wheels are locking
and activates the control valve assy. accordingly.
